Why multi-state compliance is so hard

Five things that make spreadsheet tracking dangerous.

01

42 different rule sets

PDH requirements range from 15 to 36 per cycle. Annual, biennial, or triennial. Miss one and you're looking at fines or suspension.

02

Renewal dates don't align

Florida renews in February. Georgia in December. Texas on your license anniversary. New York on your birthday.

03

Ethics hours vary by state

Florida requires 1 hour of ethics and 1 of laws/rules. New Jersey requires 2–8 hours. Some states have no ethics mandate at all.

04

Audits carry real penalties

States audit 5–15% of licensees each cycle. A Texas PE who couldn't produce documentation faced a $4,000 penalty and 18-month probation.

05

No existing tool does this

The NCEES CPC tracker has no cross-state view, no reminders, no certificate storage. Course providers sell courses — they don't track compliance.

06

Carryover traps

Virginia and DC allow zero carryover. Georgia caps it at 7.5 PDH. Get this wrong and you're short on hours at renewal time.
